Why Marathon is Famous

Nea Makri, in the area of Marathon, Greece, is a place full of history and beauty. It’s where the famous Battle of Marathon happened in 490 BC, when the Athenians won against the Persians, and where the first Marathon run began. Today, it’s known not just for its past, but also for having some of the best beaches near Athens, with soft golden sand and clear blue water. It’s a great spot to enjoy the sea, relax, and also feel connected to ancient history.

1. Battle of Marathon (490 BC) One of the most important battles in ancient history. The Athenians defeated the Persian Empire, helping to preserve the budding democracy in Athens. It inspired the modern marathon race — based on the legend of Pheidippides, who ran from Marathon to Athens (about 42 km) to announce the victory.

2. Origin of the Marathon Race The modern Olympic marathon (42.195 km) is named after this town. The first Olympic marathon in 1896 started from here. 🗺️
